Information about slate
Slate is a layered (sedimentary) and compressed product made from fine grained rock and is composed mainly of clays and volcanic ash. It is found in many countries and each have their own features, grains and colours.
Slates from the same area will normally be of different shades and composition. The colours vary from a lightish green through to an almost black colour depending on the source.
These variations in colour and layering create unique pieces for us to work with and no two pieces are ever the same.
The slate products you buy from us are all sourced locally, cut entirely by hand, dressed and then finished by hand too. This adds to their features.
Treatment of your non stain slate tableware
Slate is absorbent and can easily be marked by oil, grease and other products. We use a foodsafe treatment that seals the slate and protects it against food stains. The foodsafe treatment is absorbed into the slate over a 3 day period and lasts for several years. We will reseal your products for you when required.
Slates treated with foodsafe treatment are NOT dishwasher proof.
Never put your slate tableware in a dishwasher. The heat and chemicals will strip the sealer from the slate. Wash only in clean and warm soapy water or with a sanitiser as outlined below. Handle like you would your best china!!!
You may like to use a sanitiser for hygiene reasons. Apply direct, if neutral PH, or as part of the washing process. Whenever possible use a neutral PH product. Acidic or alkaline solutions should not be applied directly as they will strip the sealant. If your slate scratches, simply wipe the scratched area with walnut oil or any good quality oil and buff dry.Handle slate like your best pottery or porcelain tableware. Providing you look after your slate tableware and it will grace your table for many years.
